The Ambrosiana art gallery was founded in 1618 by Cardinal Federico Borromeo. Borromeo planned the gallery as part of a vast cultural project which included the Ambrosiana Library, opened in 1609. The gallery held some 172 paintings some of which already Belonged to Borromeo.

Prep for painting now in Vatican. Raphael used the faces of contemporary artists.
The cartoon by Raphael was amazing and there was a large wide electronic display in front of it and one by one all the figures become colored and enlarge with the name of the face on them. Leonardo appears in the guise of Aristotle.
We also saw "Basket of Fruit" by Caravaggio, an extraordinarily realtic work around 1594. Also on display was a long lock of Lucrezia Borgias blond hair. This museum is well laid out and you can get right up close to each painting. Amazing.
Now the library was also very interesting with Gregorian chant in the background. Contains some very ancient books.
